Drinking from vintage glass is such a pleasure, and these are no exception. The barrel shape is a simple form, with a short stem that is elegant to hold and without the spill-factor of tall stemware. This pattern was introduced in 1880 as the Beatrice Toddy Glass, and as Red Wine Glasses in the early 20th Century. This version is made by Holmegaard Glasværk between 1910 (stamped).  Wonderful condition. Cheers!

5.6" H x 2.6" diameter

I have an additional set of 6 slightly older glasses, made between 1880-1910.

Fun fact: in the 18th Century, the average wine glass held about 2.2 ounces. Today, the average wine glass holds over 15 ounces. Cheers!

Holmegaard, originally established in 1825, is Denmark's oldest and largest glass manufacturer. Between the 1930s and 1980s, the designs of Jacob E. Bang, Per Lütken, and Bang's son, Michael are considered to have transformed the company into a powerhouse of Danish design. The company’s origins began when a Danish count petitioned the King of Denmark for permission to establish a glass factory. Permission was finally granted to his widow the Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe & in 1825 she established a glass factory in Fensmark. The factory was built in the Holmegaard bog, the peat from which provided enough fuel available to produce the high temperatures required for the glass kiln. In 1928, Holmegaard welcomed its first designer, Jacob Eiler Bang (1899-1965). Originally trained as an architect, but due to his work for Holmegaard, he became known as Denmark’s first industrial designer and the creator of functionalism in Danish glassware. Today, the factory is a museum where you can view the collection and even try your hand at sanding glass. Legendary.
