Designed in 1957 by Tapio Wirkkala for Kultakeskus Oy, this silver ashtray is a masterclass in restrained, intelligent design. Understated yet undeniably sculptural, it has that effortless mid-century confidence Wirkkala did so well—clean lines, a fluid silhouette, and a sense of quiet luxury that never tries too hard. While originally conceived as an ashtray, it’s just as compelling used more loosely: a small catchall, a tabletop object, or simply a piece to admire on its own.
Produced for Kultakeskus Oy in 1957 - 916/1000 silver. 3.5" x 2" x .75" H
Tapio Wirkkala (1915 – 1985) was one of the most celebrated and multi-disciplinary designers of the 20th Century. From ketchup & vodka bottles to postage stamps, his iconic designs traversed mediums and improved the lives of all who live with his work. Like all good Finns, he was obsessed with nature - leaves, shells, spirals, ice - he had a way of transforming hard materials into soft and wonderful objects. To this day, his designs are amongst the most collectible as they are beautifully timeless & subtly bring a piece of nature into you home.
